Former US President Donald Trump is recuperating after being shot at his own rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in what appears to be an assassination attempt.
Trump, 77, revealed that a bullet "pierced" part of his ear during his speech on Saturday.
Despite the attack, he remained defiant, saying: "In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united, and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined, and not allowing evil to win."
The Republican candidate confirmed his intention to continue his campaign, announcing plans to speak in Wisconsin next week.
Expressing disbelief at the incident, Trump said he "cannot believe" such an attack could happen in America. However, he is not the first US president or former leader to face an assassination attempt.
Below are some notable previous attempts on US presidents:

1865 - Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while inside a theatre alongside his wife. He died the next day aged 56.
The Republican - and 16th US president - was still in office when he was assassinated and had stoked tensions by advocating for black rights and to end the slave trade.
1881 - James Garfield
The 20th president had only held office for six months when he was shot in the chest while walking through Washington train station.
He did not die for several weeks but medics were unable to find the bullet lodged in his chest. The gunman Charles Guitau was found guilty of murder and he was put to death.
1901 - William McKinley
The 25th president was shot by Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo while shaking hands with supporters after giving a speech.
He had been expected to recover but died when gangrene set in around his wounds.
1933 - Franklin D Roosevelt
The wartime president survived this attempt on his life in Miami.
Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was killed, however, and Guiseppe Zangara was convicted.
1950 - Harry S Truman
Another wartime president to have escaped, Mr Truman was shot at while staying in Blair House - across the street from the White House.
Oscar Callazo was convicted of his part in the attack which killed a policeman. One of the assailants was also killed.

The only effort to have taken place outside of America, the president was in Tbilisi when a hand grenade was thrown at his party.
The grenade did not explode and the Republican left Georgia unscathed.
