Donald Trump has told his supporters that he will "very, very, very probably" run to become US president for a second time in 2024. The 76-year-old made the remark while addressing a crowd in Sioux City, Iowa during one of a number of rallies he is attending to campaign for Republican candidates ahead of next week's midterm elections.
Current President Joe Biden is similarly touring the country to support the Democrat cause. Trump also continues to claim, without foundation, that he only lost the 2020 election because of widespread fraud,
"Get ready," he told the crowd. "I won twice and did much better the second time than I did the first, getting millions more votes in 2020 than I got in 2016.
"And, likewise, getting more votes than any sitting president in the history of our country by far. And now, in order to make our country successful and safe and glorious, I will very, very, very probably do it again. Very soon."
Trump did, indeed, accrue more votes than any other sitting president but his 72 million haul was still nine million short of Biden's tally. The 79-year-old President campaigned in California and New Mexico on Thursday and it is understood that meetings have been held with his advisers about a potential re-election campaign.
Trump's rally cry is not the first time he has suggested he could seek a return to the White House. Last month, in Texas, he told a crowd "I will probably have to do it again."
In September he also said to supporters in Pennsylvania: "I may just have to do it again." Trump's rivals for the presidency nomination are likely to include his own former vice-president Mike Pence and Florida governor Ron DeSantis.
