Donald Trump says he 'hopes' to visit Scotland during UK state visit

DONALD Trump has outlined his plans to visit Scotland as part of a trip to the UK later this year.

Last week, the US president said that his unprecedented second state visit to the UK was likely to take place in September – with Windsor Castle in Berkshire reportedly being lined up as the main venue.

But speaking to The Times, Trump has revealed he hopes to visit Scotland as well – the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire specifically.

“I will be there. I hope to be there,” he said.

The US president also suggested it could coincide with the grand opening of a second 18-hole course on the Menie estate, named the MacLeod course after his Scottish mother.

“We’re opening a fantastic project there and I hope I’m going to get to see it. It’s going to be great,” he added.

It comes after a poll for The National found that the majority of Scots do not think the US president's visit should go ahead as long as his tariffs on the UK remain in place.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office last week: “I was invited by the King and the country — great country. They’re going to do a second, as you know, a second fest … that’s what it is: a fest, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the first time it’s ever happened to one person.

“The reason is we have two separate terms, and it’s an honour … I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family. I think they’re setting a date for September.”

Discussions are ongoing between the White House, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace to determine the precise details of the visit.
