Donald Trump 'safe' after apparent assassination attempt outside Florida golf course

US presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after an apparent gun assassination attempt outside his Florida golf course.

Campaign communications director Steven Cheung said Mr Trump was “safe” after the incident outside the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach.

The FBI said it appeared to be an assassination attempt.

"The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach Florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump," the agency said in a statement.

There were shots fired outside the course, law enforcement sources said. Trump's campaign had earlier said he was safe following gunshots in his vicinity but gave no details.

US Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near the golf club as the former president golfed, according to local media reports.

The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in a nearby county by local police.

An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump's golf course, according to reports.

The golf course was partially shut down for Trump as he played.

The suspect appeared to push the muzzle of the rifle through the fence line when agents fired, unnamed law enforcement officials told US media.

A police official said officials were trying to determine whether the shots were fired near Trump's West Palm Beach golf course or on the grounds.

A witness, Max Egusquiza, said: “From what I saw 5 black unmarked SUVs blocked in a grey Mercedes in front of the golf course. There were about 20 or more cop cars flying from nearby streets.”

Trump was injured in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13, just months ahead of what looks likely to be highly contested US presidential election in which he faces Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in more than four decades forced Kimberly Cheatle to resign as Secret Service director amid criticism of security lapses.

The US Secret Service is responsible for the security of major political figures.

Trump was grazed in the right ear and one rallygoer was killed in the gunfire.

The gunman, identified as a 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by a US Secret Service sniper.

Trump had returned to Florida this weekend from a campaign visit that included a Friday night rally in Las Vegas and a Utah fundraiser.

After the July assassination attempt, Trump has had a stepped-up security footprint.

At outdoor rallies, he now speaks from behind an enclosure of bulletproof glass with a heavy security detail.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed about the incident and were "relieved to know that he is safe.”

It added: “They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
