An extraordinary moment in US history unfolded on Tuesday, as former president Donald Trump surrendered himself to a Manhattan courthouse.
Trump has appeared in court to be arraigned on criminal charges stemming from 2016 hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The former president pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records, as he appeared before a judge on Tuesday afternoon local time (Tuesday evening in the UK).
He appeared after being escorted to the courthouse from Trump Tower in Manhattan by the Secret Service, and surrendering himself.
Trump is thought to have been fingerprinted, before he appeared before Judge Juan Merchan, and learned the charges against him and entered his not guilty pleas.
Judge Merchan previously ruled that television cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom - but a handful of photographers have been admitted.
Trump, who was impeached twice by the US House but was never convicted in the US Senate, is the first former president to face criminal charges.
Large crowds of protesters gathered outside the courtroom where Trump is appearing.
New York police said they were ready for large protests by Trump supporters, who share the Republican former president’s belief that his indictment by a New York grand jury and three additional pending investigations are politically motivated and intended to weaken his bid to retake the White House in 2024.
