Donald Trump 'fails to comply' with January 6 committee subpoena

The committee investigating the January 6 Capitol Hill riots has said that former President Donald Trump has “failed to comply” with its subpoena for documents and testimony to assist with their investigations.

The shocking moment on January 6 of last year saw thousands of Trump supporters break into the US Congress building on Capitol Hill in an attempt to stop or delay the congressional certification of Joe Biden's election victory.

A hearing was previously told that Trump spent two and a half hours watching coverage on Fox News in a private dining room.

Three hours and seven minutes after the assault began on Capitol hill, Trump released a video recorded from the White House Rose Garden, in which he praised the rioters as "very special", but asked them to disperse.

He had been subpoenaed to appear before the House committee investigating the day in October, but the deadline for an appearance ran out on Monday.

His refusal to to turn over documents or appear before the committee has meant that action will now be taken against him.

"In the days ahead, the committee will evaluate next steps in the litigation and regarding the former President’s noncompliance,” Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson and GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, who serve as chair and vice chair of the committee respectively, said in a statement.

"The truth is that Donald Trump, like several of his closest allies, is hiding from the Select Committee’s investigation and refusing to do what more than a thousand other witnesses have done,” Thompson and Cheney wrote.

"Donald Trump orchestrated a scheme to overturn a presidential election and block the transfer of power. He is obligated to provide answers to the American people."
