Donald Trump faces rape claims, criminal probe and must make his tax returns public

Former US president Donald Trump is facing intense pressure amid an allegation of rape, a criminal probe and his tax returns having to be made public. The controversies have emerged at an inopportune time for Mr Trump, who plans on running for president in 2024 after losing the White House two years ago to current President Joe Biden.

US advice columnist E Jean Carroll has accused the former president of raping her in the 1990s at a New York department store, saying that the "music had stopped" in her love life after the alleged incident. Excerpts of the October deposition were filed late on Monday in the court where Ms Carroll is suing the former president over the alleged attack, which he denies having labelled it "a complete con job".

During the deposition Ms Carroll upsettingly said she has not developed any new romantic relationships following the encounter with Mr Trump at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan, having not had sex since 1994 or 1995.

That is not the only ongoing issue for Mr Trump, as the House January 6 committee has urged the Justice Department to bring criminal charges against him and his allies, concluding its investigation of the violent 2021 Capitol insurrection with what has been called a "roadmap to justice".

The panel's seven Democrats and two Republicans are recommending criminal charges against Mr Trump and his associates that helped him launch a multifaceted pressure campaign to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The panel additionally released a lengthy summary of its final report, finding that Mr Trump engaged in a "multi-part conspiracy" to overturn the election, with its most infamous moment coming at Capitol Hill, when a mob of his supporters stormed Congress.

The final irrepressible problem for Mr Trump is that a Democratic-controlled committee voted on Tuesday to release tax filings of the former president, who broke political norms during his tenure in the White House by refusing to release the information of his own accord.

The committee also found that required IRS audits of Donald Trump were delayed. The full level of detail that will be revealed is uncertain, but the politicians said they expect to release six years of tax returns for Mr Trump and eight affiliated companies.
