Donald Trump announces he will be running for president again in 2024

Former US president Donald Trump has announced that he will be running for president in 2024.

Speaking to hundreds of supporters at a ballroom at his palatial Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the 76-year-old said: "America's comeback starts right now."

The controversial former president made the announcement just moments after his official candidacy papers were filed with the US election authority.

"In order to make America great again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump added.

The unusually early news is believed to be an attempt to beat other Republicans seeking to be the party flag-bearer in 2024 to the punch.

However, Trump's eldest daughter Ivanka said she would not be getting involved in her father's campaign, saying she was prioritising her family and private life.

In a post on Instagram, she said: "I do not plan to be involved in politics. While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena."

US President Joe Biden responded to Trump's announcement saying the Republican "failed" his country while in office.

In a Tweet from Bali, where he is attending the last day of the G20 summit, the president said: "Donald Trump failed America."

This was accompanied by a video compilation saying Trump presided over "rigging economy for rich", "attacking health care", "coddling extremists", "attacking women's rights", and "inciting a violent mob" to try to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.
