After firing Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos will be seeking a new head coach this offseason.
Some of the top potential candidates are Dan Quinn (who was a finalist for the job last year), Sean Payton (but it would take a trade to acquire him) and Jim Harbaugh (who has a Stanford connection to Broncos minority owner Condoleeza Rice).
Another name that will undoubtedly be mentioned during Denver’s head coach search is Peyton Manning, but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
In an interview with Colin Cowherd last summer, Manning jokingly said he won’t become an NFL coach because his son’s teammates questioned Manning’s playcalling after a loss in a sixth-grade flag football game.
Manning’s given reason was seemingly presented in jest, but he does not appear interested in becoming a coach — or a general manager — in the NFL.
Manning stays closely connected to the NFL through various projects with ESPN, and he attends Broncos home games. He has been a resource for the team’s quarterbacks in recent years, and Manning is probably willing to serve in a consultant-like role for the team’s new ownership group.
Manning might be consulted during Denver’s search for a head coach, but he seems unlikely to be a candidate for the job himself.
