Don't do this in front of the Queen - it's 'aggressive'

All talk this week is of the upcoming celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The occasion will be marked with a special four-day bank holiday weekend, starting on Thursday.

It might prompt talks between people about when they met the Queen - or what it might be like to do so. With the latter in mind, one royal etiquette expert has revealed the dos and don'ts of such a scenario.

Etiquette Advisor Liz Wyse from Debrett's has shared her expert advice with the Mirror. She spoke about the correct protocol for meeting the Monarch, revealing big mistakes people make when in the presence of royalty.

Some of it might come as a surprise - including several phrases and a common arm position that those meeting Her Majesty should certainly keep away from. Liz said the conversation should always be kept light, covering topics like the weather.

She said: "If you were lucky enough to be introduced to the Queen, you'll keep your conversation light and general, you wouldn't make provocative remarks, you wouldn't enter into discussions about contentious subjects. I think a lot of people would be pretty tongue-tied when meeting the Queen, it's a fairly nerve-wracking occasion, not through any fault of hers, just because of the expectations one has."

And speaking of nerves, there are plenty of nervous habits you also shouldn't do in front of royalty - like picking at your nails or even touching your face too much.

Liz said: "Try and stand up straight, look straight ahead of you. Don't fiddle with your face, don't put your hand over your mouth. Keep your hands as still as possible, down by your side."

As well as all of that, one thing you should never do around the Queen is cross your arms, as this movement or gesture can be seen as "aggressive".

"All of these things will make you look much calmer and that's good advice in general," added the expert.
