Domino’s starts charging up to £2 for pizza deliveries – and fans are not happy

Pizza firm Domino's is bringing in a delivery fee of up to £2 - and many customers are not happy.

Domino's, which previously did not charge for delivery, is now applying the £2 fee on orders under £35 at some branches.

But many fans of the American pizza brand took to Twitter to vent their annoyance at the extra charge.

Sophie wrote: "Dominos are so sneaky man, since when did they start charging £2 for delivery."

Jeni B wrote: "I have abandoned my pizza because I discovered only a very small proportion of your new delivery charge is being passed on to your drivers! Note the amount I paid to PJ’s includes a £2 donation to Ukraine and I still got free delivery …"

Another Twitter user said: "Just noticed Domino's have started charging for delivery, not cheap as it is, off to look at the opposition."

Joshi wrote: "I always tip delivery drivers £2 so was very surprised that @Dominos _UK has just automatically added £2 for delivery. This is the first time and I am not going to pay £4 for delivery so the driver won't get the usual tip which is frustrating."

A Twitter account dedicated to the £2 fee has also been set up - called Remove Domino's Delivery Fee.

A Domino's spokesperson said: “We have introduced a small delivery charge because, like many businesses, Domino’s is facing increased labour, fuel and food costs. Our charges are low compared to many of our competitors, who are facing the same pressures and are already charging for delivery.

"Our focus is to continue delivering fresh, piping hot pizzas to our customers and to uphold the levels of service they know and love. Introducing a small delivery charge will enable us to continue doing this while covering the increasing fuel and food costs.”

They added: “Delivery charges, minimum spend and the free delivery threshold is all set by the stores, as we are franchisee business and prices have always been set by them. The majority of our stores are charging under £2, with some customers receiving a charge as low as 99p.”

The fast food chain said each Domino's store gets to decide if it charges for delivery, as well as setting minimum spends and thresholds for free delivery.

The company employs 30,000 people across the UK and Ireland.

Domino’s sold seven pizzas per second between July and September last year, with the record standing at 13 per second on July 3.

Last year Domino's ruffled feathers when one of its Japanese restaurants invented the fish and chip pizza - which fans said managed to insult England and Italy at the same time.

The listed ingredients include crispy fish and chips, lemon, potato slices, and basil, with a tartar sauce and tomato sauce base.

A Domino's regular size fish and chips pizza is on sale for ¥3,599, the equivalent of £23.

The listed ingredients include crispy fish and chips, lemon, potato slices, and basil, with a tartar sauce and tomato sauce base.

People were divided, with some left feeling unsure about the whole lemon slices, which include the rind of the sour fruit.

It sparked such an uproar that the official account for Domino's in Japan apologised after one man jokingly tweeted: "Japan Dominos have invented a dish that insults both England and Italy."

The official account replied: "We are sorry our fish and chip pizza has caused so much trouble. We think it’s quite delicious. If you are in Japan and would like to challenge let us know."
