Dominik Szoboszlai medical update as Liverpool transfer moves step closer

Dominik Szoboszlai has been given permission to undergo his Liverpool medical ahead of a £60m move from RB Leipzig.

The Hungary captain's release clause was officially triggered by the Reds on Friday evening after they had opened talks with the Bundesliga side following productive discussions with the midfielder's representatives earlier in the week.

Szoboszlai's terms expired on June 30 meaning Liverpool had to move quickly before Leipzig were able to name their own price for an important member of a squad that has already lost Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea this summer as speculation over influential defender Josko Gvardiol's future also rumbles on.

However, after activating the clause in the 22-year-old's deal, the Reds have been cleared to prepare a medical as they close in on their second signing of the summer following the addition of Alexis Mac Allister in early June.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue and Szoboszlai is likely to sign a five-year deal after making it known he was desperate to work under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Newcastle United had also been interested in the attacking midfielder but after Liverpool held a meeting with the player's EM Sports agency earlier this week, it was made clear how much Szoboszlai wanted to play for Reds boss Klopp and the good relationship between Liverpool and Leipzig helped during the short negotiating process.

It is understood the breakthrough in talks initially came when the two clubs were thrashing out the terms of Fabio Carvalho's season-long loan move to Germany, which was confirmed on Friday afternoon.

The £60m deal for Szoboszlai means he will become the fourth most expensive player of all time at Anfield behind Virgil van Dijk (£75m), Alisson Becker (£65m) and Darwin Nunez (£64m initial) and the move will take Liverpool's summer spending up to £95m following Mac Allister's switch from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Midfield has been the priority for Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke this summer following a season that saw the Reds finish in their lowest Premier League position since 2016 last time out.

Fitness problems and issues around form blighted the engine room as the Reds slipped to their worst finish of any full season under Klopp and the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has only furthered the need for midfielders this summer.
