Dominik Szoboszlai has already sent Man City duo warning ahead of Liverpool transfer

Dominik Szoboszlai will have a major part to play if Liverpool are to get back to challenging Manchester City next season.

The Reds finished 22 points behind Pep Guardiola's side last season after injuries to key players and a lack of consistency saw the team come close to missing out on European football altogether.

Europa League football was salvaged in the end by Liverpool after finishing fifth, though Jurgen Klopp will be hoping his players are able to mount a title charge once again and take on City for top spot.

The signing of Alexis Mac Allister and imminent arrival of Szoboszlai should go some way to helping keep chase with the Citizens, a team the latter is no stranger to facing.

The Hungary international has gone head-to-head against City in the last two Champions League campaigns, earning a total of four appearances against the reigning Premier League champions. He first earned 30 minutes of game time in a thrilling 6-3 defeat in September 2021, though helped gained revenge in the return fixture in Germany by scoring in a 2-1 win.

Speaking after this triumph, Szoboszlai explained how he exploited poor positioning of Kyle Walker and John Stones to latch onto a through ball before rounding Zack Steffen to score.

"This is football. We can play bad or really well against such great opposition. I noticed early on that there was space to exploit for me between Stones and Walker, and I went deeper more often, then the outstanding ball came from Konni [Konrad Laimer] and I was able to score the team bring in the lead," he said.

"We said before the game: With courage and will we can defeat everyone. That was the plan and it worked. We were able to show that we can play really well even against a top opponent can."

Again reunited with City during last season's Champions League, Leipzig had hope of progression after a 1-1 draw in their round-of-16 first-leg tie but suffered a damaging 7-0 loss three weeks later to exit the competition 8-1 on aggregate. Erling Haaland, Szoboszlai's former Red Bull Salzburg team-mate, scored five goals that night.
