Dominic Calvert-Lewin's England squad omission explained after holding World Cup hope

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been dealt a fresh injury blow after missing out on the England World Cup squad.

Calvert Lewin, 25, has suffered a dislocated shoulder in addition to a hamstring injury he suffered in the defeat to Leicester last weekend. That had put paid to any realistic chance of Calvert-Lewin making the World Cup squad despite recent performances putting him back in the England frame amid rich praise from Everton boss Frank Lampard.

But Calvert-Lewin will now see a specialist in the next 24 hours to assess a dislocated shoulder that has hampered his recent performances for Everton. It has affected his performances in the past few weeks as Calvert-Lewin has been plagued by injury problems in the past year.

Calvert-Lewin suffered the shoulder injury when making his first start of the season against Newcastle United on October 19, with the joint popping out and popping back in.

Calvert-Lewin has continued to play on even when suffering a recurrence of the problem in the goalless draw at Fulham two weeks ago. Everton manager Lampard revealed the 25-year-old was to see doctors his week and specialists will now seek to establish the extent of the issue.

Calvert-Lewin is set to miss Saturday's Premier League game at Bournemouth and the setback is another blow for a player who has seen his England World Cup disappear.

Calvert-Lewin has won 11 caps - scoring four goals - under Gareth Southgate and was seen as having a chance to make the plane to Qatar. It has been stiff competition to effectively be Harry Kane’s understudy in the squad with Ivan Toney, Tammy Abraham and Callum Wilson all pushing for a place.

But injuries have meant that Calvert-Lewin has fallen down the pecking order and his latest blow is also a potential setback for Everton’s campaign as he is a key player for Lampard.
