Dominic Calvert-Lewin gets Everton moment he deserved after season from hell

He will have dreamt of that exact moment. After his season from hell, Dominic Calvert-Lewin proved to be the hero Everton were waiting for.

Demarai Gray whipped in a delightful cross into the box to provide the striker with his only real chance of the match. He'd been waiting over 80 minutes for his opportunity, he wasn't about to let it slide.

He had been incredible in the air throughout this game, and this was no exception. He flung himself forwards as if his life depended on it and got a firm connection on the ball.

His header soared past a helpless Jack Butland and Goodison was nearly demolished a few years earlier than it was scheduled to. He was the hero that had completed one of the most unlikely comebacks, to secure safety in one of the most dismal seasons.

The full fallout from this term will come later on, but we're just focusing on Calvert-Lewin for now. Even his individual campaign could fill multiple articles in trying to dissect.

He began injured, but still scored in each of his first three matches. Then came the issue which would eventually keep him out-of-action for four months - a quadriceps injury.

It seemed at one stage as if he might not fully recover from that before the end of the campaign. Whenever he came back into the side, he was just as quickly on the sidelines again thanks to any slight issue

But the real beginning of his revival came at the weekend against Brentford. A solid performance on an individual basis brought with it a goal - not exactly one that's going to win him any awards, but it went down as his nonetheless.

And what a huge boost that could have potentially been to his confidence, because it was clear to see that he was vibrant from the opening minutes against Crystal Palace. He won five aerial duels in the opening 13 minutes, including a flick-on that would lead to a dangerous free kick for Richarlison.

In front of goal he was a little frustrated, but he was getting into the right areas. You always felt that it would just take one moment for him to prove himself.

He thankfully did not disappoint when it came. From the most frustrating of campaigns came one of the most joyous goals of his career.

Will it be the last of his time at Goodison? Who's to say at this stage.

Rumours consistently surround the striker's future and it's tough to know where he will be playing his football next season.

But, if that's the way he's going to bow out, fair play. He couldn't have done it in a much more dramatic way.
