Dominic Calvert-Lewin can complete Champions League mission if he seals £60m Arsenal transfer

Mikel Arteta and Edu already know what must happen for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to become an Arsenal player.

But more importantly, the England striker will be aware that he could fulfil his dream of playing Champions League football as soon as next season if he was to join the Gunners before the January transfer window closes.

The Everton star is back on Arsenal's radar following their failure to land top target Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina.

According to The Athletic, the north London outfit are pushing to sign one of Calvert-Lewin or Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak before Monday's deadline, whilst Raul de Tomas, Luka Jovic and Victor Osimhen have also been linked.

For the Gunners to sign a new centre-forward midway through the season, though, it's going to be expensive.

There's a strong case that Isak would be the easiest deal to complete due to his €90million (£75.4m) release clause and the fact that Arsenal would be able to negotiate with Real Sociedad to drive the price down.

"My clause? We, the players, don't take too much care of that, it's more on the side of the clubs," the Sweden international revealed back in November. "We play and the clubs negotiate with each other."

Whereas, a deal for Calvert-Lewin would be difficult for two reasons.

One is that he's contracted to the Toffees until 2025, placing them in a very strong negotiation position hence reports, as per the Daily Mail, that his price-tag is upwards of around £60m.

And secondly, Everton's lowly position in the Premier League table.

Currently sitting 16th and four points above the relegation zone - albeit with some games in hand - it would be a surprise to many if they sold their talisman in the midst of a battle for survival.

Furthermore, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has added his thoughts to the ongoing speculation, predicting that Calvert-Lewin will still be at Goodison Park on February 1.

"There’s no way," Ferdinand told his Vibe with Five YouTube channel when asked about the 24-year-old making a move to north London ."I don't think Everton let Calvert-Lewin go in this window, no chance. He’s one of the crown jewels. No way!"

Although the former England defender does make a valid point about Calvert-Lewin's importance to Everton, history tells us that money talks and a big-money offer from Arsenal may prove impossible to resist.

Tempting the Merseyside outfit into a sale this month would be a dream scenario for Arteta and Edu, whilst it would push Calvert-Lewin closer to completing his mission of playing in the Champions League.

"I am happy at Everton," he previously told L'Equipe. "I worked hard to become No.9 at this club and score goals like I did recently. Personally, I have the ambition to one day play in the Champions League and win titles.

"But for now, I'm happy at Everton."

Of the two clubs, Everton can meet Calvert-Lewin's ambition to win a trophy this season, but Arsenal are in a much better position to potentially offer him Champions League football next season.

With that said, the Gunners' chances of taking their seat at European football's top table once again will ultimately rest on what happens in the remaining hours of the January transfer window.

As Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains out of favour under Arteta and could still leave before next Monday, unless a new striker arrives, the Gunners will find themselves in a position where Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are their two main striking options for the remainder of the season.

The aforementioned duo have three Premier League goals between them so far this season and it's a lack of firepower that could end up costing Arsenal in the top-four race along with Manchester United, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.

A long-term injury has halted Calvert-Lewin's development this term, but he's still got as many league goals as Lacazette and Nketiah combined in just six appearances.

In addition, there's proof that with the right service he will reach double figures for the third season in a row. If he was to achieve this feat at Arsenal, it could be a game-changer for both parties.

Champions League qualification is the goal for the Gunners and Calvert-Lewin, so a January transfer might just be the perfect marriage where everyone involved gets exactly what they desire.
