This streak places Sabonis in the history books, as he now holds the seventh-longest streak of double-doubles in NBA history. Surpassing Elvin Hayes' record of 60 consecutive double-doubles from 1968 to 1969, Sabonis had been on a remarkable run. His streak was the longest since the merger of the NBA and ABA in the 1976-77 season, surpassing Kevin Love's mark of 53 straight double-doubles just last month.
Reflecting on his achievement, Sabonis expressed pride in his performance, stating, 'You're mentioned with some of the greats. At the end of the day, you're just out there trying to play your game and go out there and win. That's my job as a big man -- to get rebounds and to finish.'
Despite the end of his streak, Sabonis remained focused on the team's goal of winning. He mentioned that he was unaware of the jeopardy his streak was in during the late stages of the game, emphasizing the team's collective effort to secure a victory.
Notably, Wilt Chamberlain holds the all-time record for the most consecutive double-doubles with an impressive streak of 227, as reported by the Elias Sports Bureau.
