The NFL and its 32 owners have a lot of explaining to do following a lawsuit filed by recently-fired Miami Dolphins Brian Flores on Tuesday afternoon.
In a class action complaint, the 40-year-old Flores alleges the New York Giants conducted a “sham” interview for him to replace Joe Judge as the team’s head coach to satisfy the league’s Rooney Rule. The ruse appears to have inadvertently been revealed by New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who texted his congratulations to Flores on landing the Giants job before backtracking and informing Flores the team was moving ahead with Daboll before Flores had a chance to interview.
Yet the lawsuit not only reveals the inner-workings of the NFL’s coaching carousel, but an alleged nefarious plot on the part of Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to financially reward Flores for losing games as the team’s head coach.
