Dolphins free agent profile: Is Salvon Ahmed done in Miami?

The Miami Dolphins have a large group of players who are expected to hit free agency in the coming weeks, including a running back who is set to begin his fifth season in the league – Salvon Ahmed.

Ahmed, 25, was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2020 following his collegiate career at Washington.

The running back failed to make San Francisco’s 53-man roster as a rookie out of training camp, but he was claimed by the Dolphins just a day later.

Since then, Ahmed has rushed for 593 yards and five touchdowns on 3.6 yards per attempt while bringing in 16 receptions for another 274 yards and a score.

Last year, he beat out college and NFL teammate Myles Gaskin for the last veteran roster spot heading into the season. However, he suffered a foot injury in Miami’s Week 11 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders that landed him on injured reserve and ended his season.

The former Husky is now entering unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career, and while the Dolphins have holes at many positions, running back isn’t necessarily one of them.

Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, Jeff Wilson and Chris Brooks are all under contract for 2024, meaning opportunities will be limited for a veteran back like Ahmed in the system. It’s always great to have depth in case of injuries, but Miami may be better suited looking for another back in the draft or in the undrafted free-agent crop.
