Dolphins fire Patriots legend from assistant coaching job

The Miami Dolphins parted ways with wide receivers coach and pass game specialist Wes Welker on Friday.

Welker is a former Patriots legend who served in the role under Mike McDaniel for three seasons. He worked with an explosive receiving duo in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle during his time with the team.

However, after another disappointing end to a season, the Dolphins thought it was best to move in a different direction.

“I also want to thank Wes for his investment here,” McDaniel said in a statement, via Sun Sentinel’s David Furones. “This was not a decision I came to lightly, but as I have evaluated the season and areas where we must improve, I believe that change is needed and am motivated to do what is best for the team as we move forward.”

One has to wonder what shake-up could potentially come when the Patriots hire their new head coach. If Mike Vrabel gets the job, would he consider bringing Welker on board?

Welker played a major part in the Patriots’ history from 2007-2012. He was a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time First-Team All-Pro and two-time Second-Team All-Pro.

With that said, the Patriots might be fine in keeping Tyler Hughes, or they could move to hire a completely different candidate altogether. Every option should be on the table in 2025.
