Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel Eludes Trap Question at NFL Combine

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel may have saved the organization a draft pick on Tuesday, using hits wits to cleverly duck a question from a reporter that could have run the lines of tampering.

During a media address at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Miami’s coach was asked about the possibility of signing impending free agent Jordan Poyer during the NFL offseason, but McDaniel quickly shot the question down.

“I’m not in the business of tampering. We need all the draft picks we can get” said McDaniel, via Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post.

The Bills safety is set to hit the open market this offseason, and in regards to his free agency, he made clear he’s hoping to avoid playing in a state with as high of a tax hit as New York.

Of course, Florida is one of the most tax-friendly locations in the country, so links between Poyer and the Dolphins make sense. Still, McDaniel wasn’t willing to risk a comment potentially being considered tampering by the NFL and wisely opted to avoid the topic altogether.

Until thew new league year begins on March 15, Poyer is not officially a free agent, so McDaniel isn’t taking any chances when it comes to discussing the future of Bills star.

Poyer was a key cog for the Bills last season, registering 63 tackles and four interceptions across 12 games. He’s played the last six seasons in Buffalo, featuring in 91 games.
