Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: WR Erik Ezukanma

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After looking at some quarterbacks, running backs and five receivers, we’ll move on to a second-year wideout who will be trying to earn playing time before the start of the regular season – Erik Ezukanma.

After a four-year collegiate career at Texas Tech, Ezukanma was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Unfortunately, the former Red Raider didn’t get many opportunities in his first year, as he appeared in just one game, bringing in one catch for three yards.

Expected Role

Beyond Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle’s spots on Miami’s depth chart, there isn’t much that’s been decided. There could be four spots at the position on the active roster that could be handed out through training camp and the preseason.

Ezukanma will have to do battle with Braxton Berrios, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Robbie Chosen, Freddie Swain, Braylon Sanders, River Cracraft, Daewood Davis and Chris Coleman to not only earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but he’ll need to also earn playing time once the season roles around.

Bottom Line

Miami has an extremely deep wide receiver room that could result in Ezukanma being one of the players on the outside looking in. He wasn’t able to make an impact as a rookie, as head coach Mike McDaniel explained he had to make a large jump from the Texas Tech offense to learning his scheme in South Florida.

If he doesn’t make strides and impress before the end of August, there’s a chance that Ezukanma doesn’t make the roster in 2023, but he could still be a practice squad option.
