Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: QB Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

We’ll start this process with arguably the most important player on the roster -quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins selected Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

During his rookie season, he was forced to sit with Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the team. However, he was brought back in forth from the bench to the starting role throughout the year.

After Fitzpatrick’s departure, Tagovailoa assumed the full-time starting job in 2021. Over the last two years, he’s led the team to a 15-10 record in his 25 starts, but injuries have caused him to miss eight games during that time.

Last season, he set career highs in passing yards (3,548) and touchdowns (25) while leading the league in passer rating.

Tagovailoa will, once again, be Miami’s starter for the 2023 season, as the Dolphins hope he can stay healthy and help them make it to the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time since 2000-01.

Bottom Line

2023 is the most important season of Tagovailoa’s career, as he proved that he can be successful in Mike McDaniel’s system last year. This season, he’ll need to continue showing improvements and remain on the field before the Dolphins have to make a true decision on a long-term commitment.

They’ve already picked up his fifth-year option, but if Tagovailoa can impress again, Miami will likely start extension conversations next offseason.
