Dolphin spotted off the coast of Merseyside beach

Beach goers were in for a surprise yesterday when dolphins were spotted off the coast of a Merseyside beach.

The Bottle-Nosed Dolphins were captured by employees at Green Sefton passing Ainsdale beach about 100m offshore. From the photographs, there appear to be two adults and a calf.

The photos were snapped at 11.30am yesterday. Not to be confused with Porpoises and Grey Seals, Bottle-Nosed Dolphins are less common along the Sefton coastline.

Bottlenose dolphins are the most common on British Shores. and the biggest bottlenose dolphins in the world. The best places to see them are the Moray Firth in Scotland, Cardigan Bay in Wales, and the coasts of Cornwall, Northumberland. They are social animals and can often be seen in small groups of up to 15 dolphins.

A post on the Green Sefton Facebook page said: "Managed to get two distant shots of the Bottle-Nosed Dolphins as they passed Ainsdale this morning just after 11.30am, and only about 100m offshore.

"There appeared to be two adults and a calf, and the adults were breaching off the end of Shore Road for a time. Always a superb spectacle when Bottle Nosed Dolphins are off the Sefton coast - it makes a change from the more familiar Harbour Porpoises and Grey Seals.

"They appear to be getting more regular. Respect, protect, and enjoy the Sefton natural coast."
