Dolly Parton turns down Hall of Fame nomination

American country singer Dolly Parton has turned down her nomination to be considered for the prestigious US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Parton said she was grateful to be nominated but did not feel she had earned the right.

"I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out," Parton wrote on Twitter.

She lightheartedly suggested the nomination might inspire her to record a great rock'n'roll album at some point in the future.

"My husband is a total rock'n'roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one," she said.

"I wish all of the nominees good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!"

Parton was named in the shortlist last month, alongside Eminem, Lionel Richie and Duran Duran.

She would have been eligible for induction in 1992 — the main requirement for nomination is 25 years has passed since the artist released their first album — but was only nominated for the first time this year.

Her announcement on Twitter garnered largely supportive responses, with many praising her humility and class.
