Dolev Yehud: Hostage who went missing during Hamas attack found dead as US pushes ceasefire plan

The Israeli military has said it has found the body of a hostage near the Gaza border.

Dolev Yehud, 35, was thought to be among scores of hostages held in Gaza until Monday, when the military announced the discovery of his body.

They said he had been killed in the initial terror attack by Hamas militants on October 7.

It comes as the United States said it has “every expectation” Israel will accept a ceasefire proposal if Hamas takes the deal.

The plan was unveiled by President Joe Biden last week and would see the staggered release of hostages captured on October 7 in return for a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from the besieged enclave of Gaza.

There would also be a “surge” in humanitarian aid.

White House national security council spokesman John Kirby said the US had “every expectation” that Israel would “say yes” to the proposed ceasefire deal if Hamas accepts.

During an initial six-week pause in the fighting, Mr Kirby said the “two sides would sit down and try to negotiate what phase two could look like, and when that could begin”.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken on Sunday made separate calls to Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet member Benny Gantz to lobby for the deal.

However, the proposed deal ran into difficulties within hours of it being unveiled by Mr Biden.

Two far-Right Israeli ministers threatened to quit and collapse the governing coalition if the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, agreed to the proposal.

Israel is continuing to expand its offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, despite the mounting international concern about the humanitarian impact on Gaza’s civilians.

The Israeli invasion has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinians facing widespread hunger.

Palestinian health officials on Monday said Israeli strikes overnight killed 11 people, including a woman and three children, in central Gaza.

A strike on a home in the built-up Bureij refugee camp late on Sunday killed four people, including the three children, they said.

The second strike in the early hours of Monday killed seven people, including a woman, in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Israeli bombardments and ground operations in the besieged territory have killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

The country launched its war in Gaza after Hamas' October 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted about 250.

Israel says around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 more.
