DOGE Officials Tasked With Cutting 8% From Pentagon Budget

The Department of Defense has been tasked with cutting 8% from next year's budget, with DOGE officials leading the effort. Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed a positive outlook on this collaboration, even hinting at Elon Musk's potential involvement.

With a workforce of 3.7 million and a budget exceeding $850 billion, the Pentagon faces challenges in financial oversight, having never passed an audit. Tara Dougherty, CEO of Govini, highlighted the need for modernization in the weapons acquisition process, which currently relies on outdated methods like manual spreadsheets and fax machines.

The inefficiencies in the acquisition process have led to issues such as missing parts for F-35 fighter jets and cost overruns for projects like the next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile and the B-21 nuclear bomber.

Dougherty emphasized the importance of streamlining supply chains and eliminating reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly those from China, in critical military components.

To address budget cuts, the Navy is considering reducing its frigate fleet, while the Army plans to eliminate outdated drones and surplus vehicles. Republican Senator Roger Wicker welcomed the DOGE initiative, aiming to enhance efficiency and fiscal responsibility in defense spending.

However, concerns have been raised about the potential risks associated with DOGE's involvement in classified defense systems, with fears of security breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

The DOGE team's swift actions, including the dismissal of federal workers overseeing nuclear weapons at the Department of Energy and the Department of Veterans Affairs, have sparked controversy and protests. Efforts are underway to rehire key personnel to ensure the continuity of critical operations.
