Firefighters fetched a dog from an abandoned mine shaft in northern California after it fell 50ft.

Firefighters were called around 3.40am last Thursday to a mine located in El Dorado county, roughly 68 miles east of Sacramento.

“Firefighter Trevor Willingham was lowered into the shaft, and with careful planning and teamwork, the pup was secured and raised out of the mineshaft,” the Garden Valley fire protection district wrote in Facebook post.

“The dog was taken to the vet for medical evaluation, but seemed very happy to have four paws back on the surface.”

“It was a group effort,” Willingham said. “It took a lot of people to make that operation work. The dog was really compliant and a good sport. We’re glad to see him out of that situation.”

There are 5,416 mining claims and almost 2,000 abandoned mines in the area. The district warned those in the area that abandoned mines can be dangerous, adding: “Stay safe and keep your furry friends close when exploring!”

Another dog also fell down a borehole after wandering around in the same county in May. Firefighters successfully rescued the dog within an hour and 15 minutes.

It is not clear how the most recently rescued dog fell down the mine, but it escaped with minimal injuries and was swiftly reunited with its owners.
