If you're a dog owner, chances are you'd do absolutely anything for your pet. But did you know that the way you're storing your mutt's food could actually be affecting their health, and could lead to serious illness?
One dog owner wanted to raise awareness of the importance of storing your dog's food properly when she noticed mould in her own dog's food container, referring to herself as "dumb" for not storing it in a different way.
The woman, who posted on TikTok as @coupleofpaws, said: "I just found mould in my dog's food and I have to show you."
She explained that she knows you're not supposed to put food in a container that's not airtight or food safe - but admitted that she had done just that.
"I didn't really think it was that serious", she shared, as she referred to herself as "dumb" for not using a proper container.
She then showed the offending container, explaining she was about to dump her dog's new lot of food in there - until she made a chilling discovery.
There was "literal mould" all over the remaining kibbles that had been left in the container for two weeks.
The ingestion of mould in dogs can lead to gastric symptoms such as decreased appetite, vomiting, and stool changes - it can make them seriously poorly.
The video then panned to her adorable dog as she cried: "I have failed you."
"Imagine I would've fed that to my dog, that could have been really bad", she said.
At the end of the video, she recommended you leave your dog's food in the bag or put it in an airtight container.
"But you noticed and that's what matters!", someone said, in defence of the dog owner.
"I worked at a vet. I learned that you are supposed to keep the food in the bag it came in. It's the best way to keep the food fresh", another recommended.
A dog lover pointed out: "Dog food bags are made to help preserve the food!"
