Dog left to starve to death in a garden had 'scratched herself bald'

A dog who had been left to starve to death in a back garden had "practically scratched herself bald".

Five-year-old Shar Pei Daisy was rescued by RSPCA inspectors back in April after being abandoned in a garden in the Wirral area. Despite suffering from a "terrible skin condition" and being found emaciated, she is now recovering well and is looking for her fresh start.

Being taken to the RSPCA Wirral and Chester branch, animal centre manager Kay Hawthorn said Daisy, and her friend Lady, had been left to "fend for themselves" as they had been left to starve to death. Kay said: "The dogs were incredibly skinny but as soon as they came to us we used a magical treatment called food and they both started to pile on the weight.

"They’d essentially been left to starve to death. Daisy was also suffering from a terrible skin condition and had practically scratched herself bald."

The team immediately started Daisy on special medicated baths to help ease her itchy skin and she is now said to be "feeling much better". Despite King Charles Spaniel Lady being rehomed, Daisy is still looking for a family.

She was briefly rehomed earlier this year but was returned after a few months for being "too clingy" as Kay said they are looking for owners who "understand she likes to be by your side". As part of the charity's 'Adoptober' - a month-long rehoming drive promoting adoption and highlighting animals who are looking for homes - they are sharing Daisy's horrific story.

Kay added: "Daisy has been a pleasure to work with over the last few months and she’s shown a lot of love for all of our staff here. She loves to be out in the sun with the team and is a bright spark who would love to continue her training. We’d like her new owners to come in and spend time with Daisy before taking her home so that she can learn to trust them."

Daisy is ideally looking for a home with adults only or older children or teenagers, and where she will only be left for short periods of time. Find out more about Daisy on Find A Pet or contact the branch. To donate t the Wirral Branch, visit their website here.
