Dodgers Issue Apology, Reinvite Group to Pride Night After Tumultuous Invite Saga

The Dodgers have apologized for rescinding their invite to a local LGBTQ group to attend their 10th annual Pride Night.

The team has reinvited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charity, protest and performance group to the June 16 Pride Night where they will receive the Community Hero Award. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence agreed to attend the ceremony despite being uninvited just last week.

“After much thoughtful feedback from our diverse communities, honest conversations with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and generous discussions with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Los Angeles Dodgers would like to offer our sincerest apologies to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, members of the LGBTQ+ community and their friends and families,” a statement from the team read.

“In the weeks ahead, we will continue to work with our LGBTQ+ partners to better educate ourselves, find ways to strengthen the ties that bind and use our platform to support all of our fans who make up the diversity of the Dodgers family.”

The controversy began after the Dodgers initially invited the LGBTQ group, which got its start in San Francisco in 1979 and is known for being a group of primarily men that dress in nun outfits. The decision to include the Sisters sparked backlash from various critics who argued that the group was offensive to those of Catholic faith. As a result, the Dodgers decided to disinvite the group as to not distract from the purpose of Pride Night.

However, the team’s decision to not include the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence sparked a negative reaction from multiple LGBTQ groups across the country with some even threatening to pull out of attending the Pride Night next month.

Pride Night is still planning to take place Friday, June 16 at Dodger Stadium when the team faces the Giants.
