The Giants beat the Dodgers 7–5 in 11 innings on Friday night, but one of baseball’s oldest rivalries didn’t end before a bizarre play from both sides.
With Los Angeles down two and a man on second in the bottom of the eleventh, Mookie Betts popped a ball up in the infield, before chaos ensued. Giants third baseman Casey Schmitt dropped the ball, then pitcher Jakub Junis threw it into right field trying to get Betts at first.
While it seemed like the Dodgers were gonna catch a break, their baserunners got caught in between, as Betts and Michael Busch were caught in rundowns. San Francisco was able to tag out Busch as the lead runner, allowing Betts to get to third.
However, that meant that the tying run was taken off the basepaths, and the Dodgers had just one out left in the game, before losing. During the play, Dodgers announcer Joe Davis aptly described it as a “circus.”

This play was just the end of a wild game between the two teams, as Emmet Sheehan threw six no-hit innings for Los Angeles before the Dodgers bullpen blew the game.
With the win, San Francisco is now 1.5 games back of Los Angeles for second place in the NL West, but both teams trail the Diamondbacks.
