Doctors told 'amazing lad', 30, he had heartburn - but he had just 12 months to live

Tributes have poured in for a "brilliant" man who has sadly died earlier this week after battling cancer.

Mike Edwards, 30, was diagnosed with cancer last year, which had started as a mild cough that wouldn't go away.

At the time Mike, who is from Satlney near Chester, was told his symptoms were heartburn and indigestion, and he was given Gaviscon tablets which appeared to help his symptoms subside.

But he then started to experience difficulties swallowing and was later diagnosed with a cancer called adenocarcinoma in his oesophagus, reports the Liverpool Echo.

He was referred to Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, where the results of further scans confirmed the cancer had also spread to his lymph nodes, stomach and spine. It was here Mike was given the devastating news that the cancer was terminal and he could have just 12 months left to live.

Mike Edwards was hugely popular at his local football club (UGC)

Mike died earlier this week and leaves behind his mum Diane and brother Chris. Tributes have poured for the former footballer and coach, describing Mike as "an amazing lad".

In a tribute on their Facebook page, Saltney Town FC said: "We've had the devastating news that our beloved friend Mike Edwards has passed away following his brave fight with cancer. An inspiration over these last six months, you'll forever be remembered Eddy.

"Our thoughts are with your family and many friends. RIP Mike."

Saltney Town FC secretary Marc Edwards told NorthWalesLive just how popular Mike was at the club. He said: "He was just an amazing lad. Running a club like ours, it's not just about playing it's all the extras that come with running a club - if anything needed doing Mike would be the first person offering to help.

"He was just brilliant and he'll be such a huge loss. I know all the kids will be gutted and absolutely everyone at the club will be - he was such a huge part of this club."

Gresford Athletic FC posted on Twitter : "RIP Mike. Condolences to his family, friends and everybody associated with the club."

Former Rhyl and Flint Town United manager and current Runcorn Town boss Niall McGuinness said: "God bless. Thoughts are with family and friends."
