Doctor Who star Karen Gillan on fitness kick after feeling 'like a slug' after pandemic

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan says she is trying to kickstart her fitness regime after feeling “like a slug” during the pandemic.

Karen, who stars in movie The Bubble, in which a group of actors make a film in lockdown – suffers anxiety and said it increased when she lost her motivation to keep active and paid less attention to her diet.

She said: “I couldn’t bring myself to work out. I felt like a slug.

“I’m usually very driven. I didn’t realise how much better I felt mentally [with exercise] until I stopped. I didn’t feel as on top of the world as I normally do if I’m regularly working out and eating well.

“I was foggy and down. Anxiety is worse when I’m in a down state of mind.”

The 34-year-old Hollywood actress, who stars in Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy, is trying to control her anxiety through her diet and exercise.

The 34-year-old Scot told Women’s Health UK: “Some days, I don’t feel anxious at all; on others, I’m like, ‘I can’t do this. This is insane. This is a big, huge movie and I have to do this in front of people. There’s no way’.”

Karen, who wed US comic Nick Kocher in May, adds of her coping mechanisms: “I invite all of the anxiety in. It may sound weird, but I’ve been researching the psychology of it.

“With anxiety, your instinctive response is to suppress it and tell yourself not to be scared. It’s been easier to ignore my body than to confront the situation. I’m now turning that around.”
