A game-changing twist was delivered on Doctor Who last night.
The BBC One sci-fi series saw Jodie Whittaker back in action as the Thirteenth Doctor in the fast-paced episode Fugitive of the Judoon.
The alien police force known as the Judoon made their comeback as they were chasing down a mysterious target, which was eventually revealed as the seemingly Gloucester resident ordinary Ruth Clayton (Holby City star Jo Martin).
However, as the Doctor helped Ruth track down the secrets of her past they arrived at a lighthouse from Ruth's childhood, where Ruth was flooded with memories of the truth just as the Doctor unearthed something buried in sand outside: a TARDIS.
Ruth then reemerged with new clothing and revealed herself as The Doctor.
She had hid her existence as a Time Lord with her TARDIS' Chameleon Arch and went into hiding on Earth after she was hunted by a mysterious fellow Time Lord named Gat (Ritu Arya), who had hired the Judoon for a mysterious client.
As Jodie Whittaker's Doctor adamantly made clear she was the Doctor too as they went inside the new Doctor's TARDIS, neither could remember ever looking like the other.
It then soon became clear that neither the new Doctor or Gat were aware that The Master destroyed the Time Lord homeworld of Gallifrey.
Consequently, it seems that the Thirteenth Doctor may have had another regeneration in her past that she didn't recall.
Soon they went their separate ways, but Jodie's Doctor is left searching for answers by episode's end.
Naturally, Whovians were left shaken by the unexpected twists and took to social media to share their thoughts.
One fan wrote on Twitter: "The best part for me was when Jo Martin's Doctor (who I'm gonna refer to as the Nth Doctor till we know what's going on) took hold of 13s hand after introducing herself, like she was thinking 13 was going to become her companion."
Another tweeted: "Whilst fan girling over the return of Jack Harkness, it did not go unnoticed that Doctor Who finally cast its first female black Doctor #DoctorWho"
Elsewhere another fan commented: " #DoctorWho GOT ME F***ING SHOOK WHAT'S THE TRUTH"
One excited Whovian wrote: "WE HAVE A BLACK DR WHO. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. WE HAVE A BLACK, FEMALE DR WHO!!!"
Finally, for one fan it seems that the latest episode has changed their outlook on the latest series of Who: "Penny drop late yesterday. Realised this is first time have rooted for, believed and cared about The Doctor's character and predicament since any of new series, driven home by utterly convincing presence/being of Ruth."
Well, we're sure the answers to the mystery are on their way - we hope!
The episode also saw the return of classic time-travelling companion Captain Jack Harkness ( John Barrowman) who told the Doctor's companions to let her know a warning regarding "The Lone Cyberman".
