Doctor warns running can give you 'gaunt, old face' if done too much

A doctor has shared the exercise which could make you look the most aged - it could give you a "gaunt, old face."

Doctor Gerald Imber, who specialises in plastic surgery, shares many videos to TikTok where he gives bits of advice about how people should stay healthy.

In a recent clip which has received over 156,000 likes, @geraldimbermd talks about exercise and one in particular which might make us look a lot older than we are.

He said that while running is a good thing to do a couple of times a week, it will make you have an older looking face and give your body other things to worry about.

In this clip. the doctor says: "Hi, it's Doctor Imber. We're talking about things that prevent ageing, versus things that accelerate ageing.

"I have a pet peeve, it's about running."

He goes onto say that while it is ok to run in moderation, he does not see the benefits of running more than twice a week due to how it can make you look.

"I want to start this little talk by saying that have you ever seen a long distance, long time runner that did not have a gaunt, old face," he asked.

"That's what happens. In addition to the gaunt, old face your knees go, your ankles go, your back goes. It's kind of dumb."

He finishes by saying that if you want to exercise, low impact methods should be the best way to go.

In response, many rushed to the comments to thank the doctor for his advice.

One person joked: "Don't have to tell me twice."

While another stated: "Well this is great to hear as someone who hasn't run since school made me."

Despite some negatives of running the doctor spoke about, NHS Inform advice states that running is beneficial for your cardiovascular fitness and can improve lung and heart health. It can also decrease likelihood of diseases such as type two diabetes and heart disease.

On top of that, there are many mental health benefits as well as running has been known to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, among others.
