Doctor Charged In Relation To Matthew Perry’s Overdose Accepts Plea Deal: ‘Incredibly Remorseful’

Mark Chavez, one of the two doctors charged in relation to the overdose of beloved actor Matthew Perry, is awaiting sentencing after accepting a plea deal with the prosecution.

Chavez, aged 54, pleaded guilty to one drug charge at the Roybal Federal Courthouse in LA on Friday, local time. Chavez is only one of the five people who were arrested and charged in relation to the Friends star’s death late last year.

Facing one count of conspiring to distribute ketamine, the doctor could be punished with as much as 10 years behind bars.

Chavez previously confessed to selling ketamine to another doctor, Salvador Plasencia, who in turn allegedly sold the drugs to Perry’s personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa. Plasencia denies the charges made against her.

Matthew Perry was infamously found dead in his jacuzzi last October, with coroners reporting that high levels of ketamine had been found in his system.

Investigations and documents from Iwamasa’s court hearings revealed that the actor was injected with the illicit drug three times on the day of his death.

As a result, Mark Chavez has been charged with providing ketamine to the doctor who allegedly sold it to Perry’s assistant, who helped the actor take the drug.

The doctor’s lawyer told the press that his client is “incredibly remorseful” for his role in the unfortunate death, and is doing actively helping authorities however possible.

“[Chavez] is trying to do everything in his power to right the wrong that happened here,” said the lawyer.

The LA doctor was granted a bail of $50,000 USD, and has agreed to no longer practice medicine.

The maximum sentence for his charge is 10 years in prison, however, his acceptance of a plea deal means this full punishment is unlikely.

Matthew Perry was found dead on October 28, 2023, by his assistant who reported the star’s last words to him were: “Shoot me up with a big one.”
