Doc Martin viewers fume over heartbreaking twist in penultimate episode

Doc Martin viewers are feeling emotional as the ITV series draws to a close.

Those who tuned in to catch Wednesday night's penultimate episode of the much-loved drama watched as Martin Clunes ' popular character pondered whether to leave his quaint, idyllic Cornish town and try his luck in London for a new chapter.

The series finale will reveal the doctor's life-changing decision and his internal debate about whether to head to the Big Smoke or stick around in Portwenn and carrying on with his usual lifestyle.

Although the doctor attempted to keep the news of his job offer in London low-key, word quickly got out about Martin's possible decision to leave the small town where he has lived for around 10-years, with many local residents upset over the prospect of saying goodbye to their local GP.

Viewers watching the penultimate episode of Doc Martin were equally unimpressed, with many taking to social media to share their anger as he considered moving to London.

"I will be extremely sad if doc martin takes the job in london — ten series in and after the character development, i’d rather them stay in port wenn," one fan of the show mused on Twitter.

"If doc martin moves away everyone in that town will be dead in a week," another joked, as a third added: "Why would anyone want to leave beautiful Portwenn to live in London #docmartin."

Some took issue with the final series in general, with one disappointed viewer writing: "This last series of Doc Martin really is disappointingly poor.

"Every episode is a recycled plot from a previous series, and we’re back on the “will they move to London” crisis again."

Others loved the penultimate episode, gushing things like: "The news going round the village was so true to the show’s spirit, and Mrs Tishell and Penhale’s reactions were so right. Some funny moments too. Gonna be sad when this series and this show comes to an end. #DocMartin."

The British medical comedy drama television series first aired on ITV in 2004, with nine series broadcasted between then and 2019. The tenth and final series premiered last month and will conclude on Wednesday.

Doc Martin continues on ITV at 9pm on Wednesday, 26 October.
