Dubliners are being warned that there is a ban on swimming on Velvet Strand Beach in Portmarnock for the next three days.
According to Fingal County Council, the temporary 'Do Not Swim' notice went into effect on Sunday night due to a "possible effect on water quality due to stormwater overflow at pumping station. They said: "A temporary Do Not Swim prohibition notice has been issued for Velvet Strand, Portmarnock.
"This is due to the possible effect on water quality due to stormwater overflow at pumping station on Strand Road caused by heavy rainfall." According to Fingal County Council, a new resample is to be taken by Wednesday 14 September.

Meanwhile, a Do Not Swim notice has also been extended on Front Strand Beach in Balbriggan to Wednesday, September 14. Fingal County Council said: " Heavy rainfall (yellow rain warning) on the 4th September resulted in an overflow at Quay St. pumping station in Balbriggan.
"Subsequently a sample from Monday 5 September met the standard for poor water quality. Further sample results from Wednesday 7 September saw an improvement in water quality with results within the mandatory standard for bathing waters, however not to the level required to remove the current notice.
“A resample will be taken on Monday 12 September with results expected 14 September, when a decision to remove the prohibition notice can be made and replaced with the all season advisory notice.” Members of the public can check for water quality at any of the monitored bathing waters in Ireland in advance by accessing the EPA website at www.beaches.ie or by checking the notice board at the entrance to each beach.
An explanation of the standards used for reporting results of bathing water can be found on the Fingal County Council website.
