'Do not swim' notice for Balbriggan beach extended after 'faecal bacteria' found in nearby river

A 'Do not swim' notice for Front Strand Beach in Balbriggan has been extended after "faecal bacteria was found in a nearby river.

The latest bathing water samples showed that the water met the standard for ‘good’ water quality. However, the decision was made to extend the notice after a consultation with the HSE.

Elevated levels of faecal bacteria were found in the nearby Bracken River. A misconnected pipe was found to be causing the problems and has since been fixed.

Samples of the river from the 25 August showed that the level of E.coli remained high and posed a risk to the bathing water at the beach.

Fingal County Council said: "Irish Water and Fingal County Council have been investigating potential sources of contamination to the river and the bathing water and these investigations will continue. Frequent testing of the river and the bathing water will continue until the situation is resolved.

"The next bathing water sample will be taken on Monday 29th August with results expected on Wednesday 31st August.

"Full details of Bathing Water Quality results from resamples taken on Thursday 25th August, 2022 are as follows:

• South Beach Skerries met the standard for ‘excellent’ water quality.
• Front Strand Beach Balbriggan and Loughshinny Beach both met the standard for ‘good’ water quality (the prohibition ‘do not swim’ notice remains in place at Balbriggan).
• The non-identified bathing water at Malahide Beach also met with ‘excellent’ status (constant red flag)."
