Do Not Swim notice extended at popular Dublin beach due to high levels of bacteria

A Do Not Swim notice for Balbriggan's Front Strand beach has been extended due to continued high levels of bacteria.

Since July 25, "elevated bacterial results" have been found from seawater sampling and beachgoers have been told to avoid swimming at the beach.

Fingal County Council said that initial investigations found no visible signs of pollution or network issues. River monitoring at the River Bracken has been conducted on scheduled bathing water sampling dates since the start of the bathing season, June 1.

The Council said this resulted in a section of the river which flows through the town of Balbriggan being identified for focused investigation, and following an in-channel river walk, a "visible sign of pollution found which could be a potential source of the elevated bacteria in the river".

Authorities are unsure at this point what the cause of the pollution is and an investigation is in progress involving Irish Water and Fingal’s Drainage and Water Pollution teams. The Council said that Balbriggan Beach remains open but "beach users are asked to respect the ‘Do Not Swim’ notice as it has been put in place to ensure that the health of bathers is not compromised".
