'Do not approach': Manhunt as convicted killer escapes from Scottish prison

A CONVICTED killer with links to Glasgow and Edinburgh has escaped from custody, sparking an urgent manhunt. 

Raymond McCourt, a convicted prisoner at HMP Castle Huntly, was reported missing at around 5.30pm on Tuesday (April 22).

The 59-year-old is said to use public transport and has connections to the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas. 

Police are warning the public not to approach him. 

McCourt is described as being 6ft 2ins in height, of stocky build, with short grey hair and beard. Officers say he has reduced mobility. 

(Image: Police Scotland) McCourt was last seen wearing a long black trench coat, grey dress trousers, a grey waistcoat, a blue shirt with a red and white tie, and brown shoes. 

McCourt was jailed for life in 1993 for murdering a newsagent. He had shot Cambuslang shopkeeper Khalid Mahmood in the head, killing him, before attempting to rob a nearby bakery.

The then 27-year-old also shot local woman Moira Rooney and PC Brian Williams.

Any sightings should be reported to Police Scotland via 101, quoting reference number 2857 of April 22, 2025.
