Covid-19 has been once again doing the rounds in Ireland, with cases on the rise since the end of May.
Latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre released yesterday, June 23, indicate “an ongoing increase” of cases of Covid-19 here. With that in mind, what are the main symptoms of Covid-19 that we should be aware of at the moment?
According to the HSE, the most common symptoms of Covid-19 are a dry cough, fatigue and a temperature over 38 degrees Celsius as well as having chills. As we move into summer, many people have been affected by hay fever, but symptoms of Covid-19 “can be like symptoms” of these allergies, colds or even the flu.

Less common symptoms that could indicate that you have Covid-19 include the usual loss of taste or smell, headache, nasal congestion and a sore throat. As well as that, dizziness, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, skin rashes, conjunctivitis and muscle or joint pain are all symptoms of the virus.
More severe symptoms that could lead to hospitalisation include confusion, pain or pressure in the chest, fever, loss of appetite and shortness of breath. The HSE website said: “You may not have all of the symptoms or your symptoms may be mild. You can still get infected if you are fully vaccinated. But your symptoms may be mild.
“It can take up to 14 days after you are infected for symptoms to show. You can spread COVID-19 during this time.” As always, if you have symptoms of Covid, you must self-isolate and wear a face mask “if you have to be around other people”.
Advice from the HSE is to contact your GP if you have any doubt about your symptoms or have an underlying condition that puts you at a higher risk of severe illness. Call 112 or 999 if you are very short of breath and cannot complete a sentence.
