The Democratic national convention is under way, with a primetime address scheduled tonight from former president Barack Obama, as well as the former first lady, Michelle Obama.

Here’s a look at the notable Democrats who are part of Tuesday’s speaker schedule.

What is the speaker’s schedule for tonight’s DNC?

The main programming for the convention’s second day runs from 6pm CT to 10pm CT, with primetime remarks from Barack and Michelle Obama. However, with the first night running over by 90 minutes, these times may be subject to change.

Early in the evening, Jaime R Harrison, the Democratic National Committee’s chairman, called the session to order. The grandsons of John F Kennedy and Jimmy Carter are among the early speakers at the convention.

Notable Democrats and when they are scheduled to speak tonight also include:

Beginning at 6pm CT

  • Remarks by Kyle Sweetser, former Donald Trump voter

  • Remarks by Stephanie Grisham, former Trump White House press secretary

Beginning at 8pm CT

  • Host introduction by Ana Navarro

  • Remarks by Chuck Schumer, United States Senate majority leader

  • Remarks by Bernie Sanders, United States senator, Vermont

  • Remarks by JB Pritzker, governor of Illinois

  • Remarks by Ken Chenault, American business executive

  • Remarks by Michelle Lujan Grisham, governor of New Mexico

Beginning at 9pm CT

  • Remarks by Tammy Duckworth, United States senator, Illinois

  • Remarks by Douglas Emhoff, second gentleman of the United States

  • Remarks by Michelle Obama, former first lady of the United States

Beginning at 10pm CT

  • Remarks by Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States

The full lineup of every speaker is available on the DNC website.

How can I watch the convention?

The party will livestream the convention on its Democratic national convention website and on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

The Guardian has a team of reporters in Chicago and will be covering the convention in depth, including live blogs each night.

Major news networks are likely to carry primetime programming. In the US, PBS will have live coverage beginning at 8pm each night.

Who spoke Monday night?

Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on Monday night, taking the stage briefly to thank Joe Biden for his service to the country.

“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation, and for all you will continue to do, we are forever grateful to you. Thank you, Joe!” she said.

Biden closed out the first night of the convention, with an introduction from first lady Jill Biden and his daughter Ashley Biden.

Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also spoke at the convention.

What else is there to know about the 2024 DNC?

The Democratic national convention is being held in Chicago from 19-22 August.

Party leaders have emphasized that the theme of the week will be “passing the torch” to a new generation of leaders, reflecting Harris’s ascension to the nomination after Biden abandoned his presidential campaign last month.

Each day of the convention has a specific theme:

  • Monday: For the People

  • Tuesday: A Bold Vision for America’s Future

  • Wednesday: A Fight for Our Freedoms

  • Thursday: For Our Future
