Tim Walz’s family wept as he accepted the Democratic nomination for vice president on Wednesday, as he told them: “Hope, Gus and Gwen – you are my entire world and I love you.”

Walz beamed as he took to the stage at the convention, where he was met with chants of “Coach! Coach! Coach!” After thanking running Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, the crowd roared as he told them “never underestimate a public school teacher.

He ended his speech on familiar ground, with an extended football metaphor.

“It’s the fourth quarter, we’re down a field goal, but we’re on offense and we have the ball, we’re driving down the field and boy do we have the right team... Kamala Harris is ready! Our job for everyone watching is to get in the trenches and do the blocking and the tackling,” he said.

Walz’s family joined him onstage after the speech, where they hugged and held hands.

Day three of the convention in Chicago also saw speeches from Bill Cinton, Nancy Pelosi, Oprah Winfrey and performances from Stevie Wonder and John Legend.

On Thursday Kamala Harris will formally accept the Democratic nomination for president.
