'DNA tests revealed dad isn't my biological rather - now mum wants to silence me'

A woman has opened up about the devastating realisation that her dad isn't her biological father, after taking a DNA test to confirm her family tree.

Her mother kept the truth from her for her whole life, leaving the devastated daughter feeling incredibly betrayed. To make matters worse, the mum is now trying to silence her daughter from telling others about her real dad as she doesn't want it to go public.

Airing her frustrations on Reddit, the anonymous daughter says she has a right to know about her own family and to tell others the truth, but has asked advice on how to deal with her 'completely unhelpful' mother.

The woman, who remained anonymous, wrote: "So I found out via DNA testing my birthfather is not who I was told. I found [my] real birth father's family to find out he was placed for adoption.

"My grandmother (DNA proven) is younger than who I was told is my birth father."

After the life-changing news, the woman then tried to collect any scraps of information she could to discover more about her father to discuss with doctors, but her mum has been reluctant.

Desperate for the truth about her biological dad, she collated the small amount of information that she did have to write a post online, asking anyone who matched the description to come forward. This decision left her mother seething.

"My birth mother messaged me very angrily because how dare I let people know her husband was not my father," she said.

"That I had absolutely no right to do so. She even tried to say I must not be her daughter than (forgetting she also took a DNA test that verifies she is my mother) I told her if she would just tell me who he is I would not have to make a public post. That I have a right to my genetic history especially with my and my kids medical history."

The woman and her kids all have medical issues so finding out more about her genes and medical history could be a big help, but her mum still refuses to get involved.

In response, many agreed that she has a right to her genetic history and should be able to get more information from her mum about this.

One person wrote: "Your genetics are your own, and they contain your story."

While another stated: "You are absolutely correct that you have a right to this information. Doubly so because of the medical concerns. I'm wondering if there is a reason your mum is so unwilling to disclose his identity?"
