Djed Spence: Tottenham confirm signing of key Antonio Conte target in initial £12.5m deal

Tottenham have completed the signing of Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence.

The England Under-21 international had been identified as a key target for Antonio Conte this summer but talks between the club dragged on.

On Friday, however, the full-back travelled to the club’s Hotspur Way training base after a deal was struck on a fee worth an initial £12.5million which could yet rise to £19m with add-ons.

Spence has signed a five-year contract as Spurs win a fierce transfer battle, with Nottingham Forest - the club he helped win promotion for last season – Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma all keen.

Spurs had already signed Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet this summer and Conte is still keen on a creative attacking player.

Returning to London after leaving Fulham’s academy for Teeside in 2018, Spence will compete for a starting role at right wing-back, casting the future of Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal into doubt.

Tottenham begin their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on Saturday, August 6.
