DJ Tim Westwood steps down from Capital Xtra radio show after sexual misconduct claims

DJ Tim Westwood has stepped down from his radio show following claims of sexual misconduct from several women.

The hip hop DJ had a regular show on Capital Xtra on Saturday nights.

A spokesman for Global radio, who own Capital, said: "Following the claims that have recently come to light, Tim Westwood has stepped down from his show until further notice.”

The former BBC DJ is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct by women who say he “abused his position in the music industry” in a bid to exploit them.

The 64-year-old strongly denies the allegations.

Westwood is accused of unwanted sexual behaviour and touching from incidents that are alleged to have occurred between the years of 1992 and 2017.

Both the BBC and the Guardian have claimed they have heard “detailed accounts from seven women” in a joint investigation into the behaviour of the former BBC Radio 1 DJ.

The BBC Three documentary Tim Westwood: Abuse of Power sees the seven accusers anonymously detail their encounters with the Radio 1 DJ.

One of the seven women the BBC spoke with accused Westwood of taking her to his London apartment and initiating sex when she was 19.

The woman claimed Westwood invited her to do work experience in London and collected her from the station, where he took her to his flat.

She said in the BBC Three documentary: “I remember being in the car, he kept putting his hand on my leg and stroking, touching my face, running his hands in my hair. What are you doing? Stop touching me.”

The woman said she was supposed to be staying in a hotel, continuing: “If you’re going to do an internship somewhere, you’re not expecting that person to take you to their house. That’s unprofessional. Especially for someone of your calibre at that time in this country.”

She said of his apartment that it “was not anything special at all” and had “hardly any furniture”, but was instead strewn with records, trainers and oversized clothes “everywhere”.

She alleged that in the apartment Westwood started “touching” and “removing stuff”, prompting her to “pull [the clothing] back”.

She said: “I didn’t give him any kind of come-on. There was no flirtation. That is not somebody I would ever look at and find attractive. I don’t even date white boys.

“If you’re actively trying to touch me and I’m pushing your hands away, that means I don't want to do anything with you. If you are trying to remove an item of my clothing and I put it back on, that means I don't want it to be gone. If I’m showing you I’m uncomfortable, why would you not just stop doing it?”

The woman told the BBC her concerns over how Westwood, who was “a lot older”, would “react” if she tried to leave his flat and said she chose to “just submit to it”.

She continued: “It was really weird. From the back, he’s pulling my hair and I'm thinking, he’s going to rip my hair out.

“I remember looking for my clothes so I can get dressed quickly. I don’t want this man to see me naked, even though he’s just seen me naked.”

She concluded: “Traumatic, that’s how I’d describe it. It was disgusting and I felt like s*** afterwards. How have I let myself be subjected to that? That’s how I felt.”

The work experience Westwood had secured for the accuser did not happen, according to the BBC.

A spokesperson for Westwood told the BBC he was a “well-respected and highly successful DJ” and “he strenuously denied in their entirety the serious allegations being made against him."

The statement continued: “[Westwood] wanted to make clear that he did not behave in the manner described and any suggestion that he acts, or has acted, in the way described would be false.”

In another statement, a spokesperson for Westwood said: "Tim Westwood strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

"In a career that has spanned 40 years, there have never been any complaints made against him officially or unofficially.

"Tim Westwood strongly rejects all allegations of wrongdoing."
