Visitors to a 'brilliant' Nottinghamshire marina have expressed their hopes a plan for new flats will not detract from the area's appeal. Plans have now been submitted for 29 apartments to be built at Beeston Marina, overlooking the scenic and popular site on the River Trent.
Beeston Marina Ltd previously distributed consultation leaflets to locals, asking for their opinions on the plan which would face Nottingham Canal. The initial proposal was strongly opposed by the Beeston Civic Society, which "wholly" objected to the "location, design, massing, type and density of the accommodation".
But people visiting the location gave the plans a more welcoming reception. Hazel Brooks, 75, who was walking her dog along the marina, said: "Getting the balance right is important, I do not mind as long as the rest of it stays the same."

The retiree from Bramcote added: "I would love to live in one of the homes that are already here so I understand the appeal. If it's carefully done and still allows people to enjoy the space I don't see a problem with it."
Sally and Tim Harrison, who frequently travel from Belper in Derbyshire to the marina, had a similar outlook on the plans. "We come here fairly often, it is great as it is but progress has to happen too. As long as people can still enjoy coming here I don't see much trouble with it," Mrs Harrison, 61, said.
Mr Harrison, 59, who had just retired and said the couple would now be visiting the area more, added: "It could be a win-win for the area, if its done right. There's a balance, but it could add something and would be a lovely place to live."
The Beeston Marina is a family-owned business in its second generation, with a pub, café and Chandlery on-site. There are also more than 100 residential mobile homes.
Another local, who did want to be named, said: "As long as it stays relatively similar I think most people will not mind. The wildlife here and setting is brilliant at the moment, but I'm sure that will be taken into account and protected."
The applicant, Beeston Marina, and its planning agent P&DG, were approached for comment. The planning application is pending consideration by Broxtowe Borough Council.
