Diving star Jack Laugher hopes to win gold at Commonwealth Games in tribute to gran

Diving star Jack Laugher wants to win Commonwealth Gold for his gran who died two months ago.

The Yorkshire-born Olympic champ will be England’s flagbearer at Thursday's opening ceremony in Birmingham.

He told how he hopes to add to his medal tally for gran Bernice Allbutt, after he had to miss her funeral when his parents got Covid.

At the time he was preparing for the World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, which had Covid testing.

Jack, 27, of Harrogate, said: “I want to bring it home for her. She lived her whole life in Dudley so she was very local to these Games. Through the pandemic I was not able to go and see her as often as I would like.

“I loved her and I miss her so it was very emotional.

“She followed my career so closely. She was so proud.”

Weightlifter Emily Campbell, 28, of Nottingham, will carry the flag alongside Jack before a global TV audience of around 1.5bn.
